Comment: Nothing quite puts you in the festive mood like an old classic from Irving Berlin and with Blake's two versions of the song, it's double the fun. The first version is more classically inspired and in keeping with the original that we all know and love. The second version (festive mix) is much more up tempo but still has a wonderful sound, thanks to the unique harmonies and arrangements provided by Blake.The third song on the CD, In The Bleak Midwinter, is another Christmas favourite and really hi-lights the wonderful voices of the group members, not just as an ensemble but also as individuals.
They sing with such clarity and each vocal part combines to create a beautiful and almost breathtaking harmony and as with their other songs, they never have one voice more prominent than another.If you are already familiar with their sound from buying their debut album, then you'll know what I'm referring to.
I bought this CD for several of my friends as a stocking-filler and they have all been delighted with it.Although it is now too late to buy for this christmas, get it anyway and enjoy it for many years to come - it is a true classic. I heard this twice this week on Classic FM, and what can I say...its the best version of this beautiful classic I've ever heard. I haven't heard the whole of the alternative "pop" version of this track which is also on the single, although I was able to watch the band mixing it in the studio, via the Classic FM video dairies for the band. That version seems like a really good one for dancing to at Christmas parties, where as the Classic FM version makes you feel like sitting by the fire with a glass of yummy red wine.
There are 4 singers in Blake, all of them very good looking baritones - the sound they make when they sing together on White Christmas is just superb. There is just so much power and control as they each take separate solo lines too. I was so impressed. I think that even Cosby himself would be proud of this version, although there is room in the christmas world for both! When Classic FM revealed that all these singers were British and that William Hill had given them 3-1 odds on getting as high as Christmas no.2 - I was so amazingly proud. It's so good that they're pure British and flying the flag for british classical music. I can't wait to hear more of them.
