Customer Rating: Summary: Vinyl Buyers Dont Want Picture Discs Comment: The CD of Sam's town, just like that of Hot Fuss is utter compressed squash. The 'hot' mastering techniques used on both these two CDs are two of the worst examples of loud, compressed and squashed mastering. I know because I have Hot Fuss on vinyl and it sounds fantastic, far better than the CD. I'm sure Sam's town would also shine but Universals's decision to import the US picture disc pressing of Sam's Town into the UK and not press it on plain vinyl in the UK is just lazy. I buy vinyl because I do not want the loud compressed squash on the CD. So why the hell would I want a picture disc? Most vinyl buyers buy vinyl for the sound quality and pictures discs are rubbish. They sound terrible and have a very short term life. Come on Universal press up Sam's Town on plain vinyl? Hot Fuss is fantastic on vinyl where as both Hot Fuss and Sam's Town on CD are just compressed squash.
If you care about music compare Hot Fuss on vinyl and on CD on a half decent system. You wont believe your ears; just listen to the difference in the dynamics especially of the drum work, it is so much more exciting on the vinyl than the CD. If I want it loud I use my own volume control!
This is not because vinyl is better than CD this is because the record company have decided to max out the volume so much that everything has to be squashed into a limited range to keep the volume the same throughout. For some absurd reason they think this sells more copies. So why is vinyl the only physical format where there's growth in sales?
I dont care what they do to the CD provided if I have the option to buy a decent mastered version on the vinyl pressing.
