This Oscar winning romantic drama from Walt Disney is one of the warmest and adult themed animations in the genre, and has a heart warming story and some beautifully crafted songs.
The narrative centres around the beautiful independent Pocahontas, who we first see diving off a hill into a gorgeous river, and viewers are instantly thrust into her life as we see what's on her mind. Pocahontas is a great central character to have, as she embodies a very strong woman with her own mind. Her thoughts and feelings are well executed and are inspirational to women of all ages and is one of the strongest Disney characters ever created, right up there with Snow White.
With ideologies of love and war, this is one of the most mature Disney pictures to date with plenty of adult themes and a strong sense of realism.
The concept of love is excellently observed by director Mike Gabriel as we see the central character in many close shots, and a careful approach is used when she sees John Smith for the first time.
The idea of loving the wrong person has been covered in many films before, and here Pocahontas falls in love with the enemy, a man who has come over with a group of men in search of gold and wish to take over her people's land. This battle of minds is also a fight over culture and humanity a very strong and issue driven drama which really makes you think come the end of the film.
Slight disappointment as the narrative lacks at points and the ending feels rushed but thankfully isn't as daft as some other animations which rush into clichés.
This film is also memorable for the fantastic soundtrack, and particularly the Oscar winning Colours of the Wind, which is the best part of the film by a mile, a really strong sentimental moment in the character's lives, and dives deep into the romantic genre and will make the weak at heart shed a tear or two.
Not the most entertaining Disney, but the different approach and the strong adult focused themes of love and war are strong and engaging.

Comment: ...and that's creating beautiful love story's that entertaing not just the children but the adults too, bursting with catchy, and often powerful songs, as well as being just as visually stunning as it's messages are morale. You can't ever go wrong with a Disney, expecailly one that's made to this quality.
I remember seeng this in cinema when I was a kid (must have been about 6 years old) and having bought the DVD a few years back, have watched it at least once a year since. Along with Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, the Hunchback of Notre Dame, the Fox and the Hound, the Lion King and the Little Mermaid, this is one of my all time favourite's from Disney - one of those special movies that I can never get bored of watching.
Visually, the film is stunning - the land upon which Pocahontus lives and the Amercian's are trying to invade is depicted beautifully - and there are many instances that the creators seem to have really pushed themselves to create something different - like when you see Pocahontus singing in the 'Colours of the Wind' and she seems to actually be created from the wind). The soundtrack is good - not the greatest Disney have ever come up with (I'd still say that belongs to the Lion King, hands down) but the song 'Colours of the Wind' will remain as one of my all time favourites from any Dinsey film. The story, although not historically accurate, is at least educational and thought-provoking, and teaches good moral lessons of acceptance and open-mindedness, as well as to pay more attention to nature. Finally, the comdey is tehre for the younger kids in the form of a pug-dog, a racoon, and a humming bird, so even small children will be entertained.
It's often thought that Disney film are solely made for children, but I have have just as much joy watching them as an adult as I ever had watching them as a kid, perhaps even more as I am now old enough to fully understand and appreciate the story. Pocahontus is by no means the best of the Dinsey films, but definately up there with the greats, and this will remian one of those films that I will be coming back to time after time after time. Customer Rating: Summary: A fantastic film Comment: Pocahontas is one of the few Disney films that I feel has it all. It's got great music by the legendary Alan Menken, (who also composed the music for Mermaid & Hunchback of Notre Dame), loveable characters (Miko the cheeky racoon in particular) and the animation is some of the best I've seen from Disney, especially some of the drawings of Pocahontas.
The film also has some good messages for kids deep down too, it has a strong anti-racism theme and promotes the wild beauty in our environment.
I've done my research on the actual Pocahontas and in all honesty this film does fail to give a completely accurate description of the history of Pocahontas and the Indian tribes but that wasn't really why I bought it. I bought this Disney film at the age of 16 because I've grown up watching Disney films and now when also choosing which film to watch I also choose out of the ones with the best music and animation too and Pocahontas has it all.

Yes,I admit it's not historically accurate but it's only a Disney film designed for a bit of fun! The songs however,are the making of this film with highlights including the beautiful 'Colours of the Wind' and the very catchy 'Just around the River Bend'. If you have young children (or you just fancy a enjoyable watch yourself!), this film is a must buy. A lot of animated films may date with time but Pocahontas certainly won't! Top stuff.
