Summary: Cynical money-spinning does matter. Apparently.
Comment: Godzilla is re-invented and re-born as a prehistoric monster mutated by French nuclear testing. Before long he has arrived in New York to spread destruction and terror.

There is an argument going as to whether Godzilla should have been 'updarted', 'changed' or whatever. To be quite honest I don't think it matters. In fact I can't understand why the more recent Japanese films didn't start taking greater advantage of CGI. The problem I have with this movie is that it's just typical of the way a lot of monster movies are made now. Unfortunately the days of people like O'Brien and Harryhausen (who considered entertaining and terrifying audiences as being their most important objective) are now long-gone. Modern creators of monster movies are designer-suited executives who regard movies as 2-hour-long adverts for all the toys, video games and other merchandise/trash they'll be launching. You can almost hear the makers of the US Godzilla now. "Well, it's a monster film, so have a lot of effects, explosions and so on. That's all we really need". The wafer-thin plot is ridden with holes - script-writers of these kinds of films these days think audiences are as stupid and lazy as they obviously are themselves. The characters are all cardboard cut-outs, Broderick quite obviously hamming it up. The film plods along, the monster is barely visible through the rain and darkness, and the laughable 'baby Godzillas' scene just looks like the film has suddenly turned into "Attack of the Clockwork Toy Dinos".

In the old days, bad monster movies (such as some of the 1960s Godzilla films) were "so bad they were good", were entertaining in their cheapness. Now, however, bad monster movies (and bad movies in general) are tedious, spiritless, flavourless and bland. This movie was worth seeing at the cinema out of pure curosity, but as a DVD it's a waste of money and shelf space.

Summary: Well, I love this film
Comment: This is the first review I've written for Amazon. So many people have had bad things to say about this film for so long, I thought I should take the time to say something positive about it. So here goes.

I love this film!!! I've watched it many times. It's got great special effects. I loved the slipping over on the sweets (I don't want to save any more for fear of spoiling the plot). Matthew Broderick and Jean Reno are magic to watch. I loved the performance of Doug Savant.

I'm sure I will continue to enjoy this film for the rest of my life. It's in my top 5 favourites. I don't know why so many people panned this film. It's definitely a case of... Don't listen to the critics. Watch it and make up your own mind. If you take the time to watch it, I really hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Summary: Better than King Kong, but this is not Godzilla as we know it
Comment: The only problem with this film is the title, if they'd called it something else then you would not get people comparing this to Godzilla quite so much, so just pretend that this is a monster movie, nothing to do with Godzilla and you'll enjoy this film alot more.

None of the actors would win any awards for their acting, it's good enough, but that's it, but if it's action, excitement, monsters and a few cheap laughs every now and then then this is one you'll enjoy this.

Imagine Jurassic Park in New York city as it's alot like that (except there being only one species), unlike King Kong at least they actually give you an explanation as to why this monster is so large and has not just appeared seamingly out of thin air.

Summary: It's just a bad film!
Comment: Unlike some of the other people who have reviewed this, I'm not a Godzilla fan outraged that this film doesn't do justice to the original. My complaint about this film is simply that it is naff in its own right.

Don't bother!

Summary: Good film, for the older ones
Comment: Good movie, including the scientific side of the Godzilla legend. It's an interesting movie and I do actully like it alot dispite the other reviewers' critisisms. I don't think it wasn't particully well done, but it's the story and the scary ending that do it for me. Also the love twist in the middle. If there's anyone to blame for the (rather bad) way it turned out, it's gotta be the director as the acting is brilliant. I advise you to try it if you like the new King Kong film.
Thanks for reading.
